1 in every 88 children has some form of an ASD, or autism spectrum disorder. When people refer to autism, they are generally referring to Autistic Disorder, which is sometimes known as “classic” autism. Individuals with autism may have significant language delays, social challenges, communication challenges, and/or unusual behaviors. Autism begins before the age of 3 and lasts for an individual’s entire life. Symptoms of autism may develop soon after birth, but signs of autism may not occur until after the child is 24 months old. Diagnosing a child with autism is difficult as there is no specific medical test to diagnose the disorder. Instead, doctors must analyze the behavior and development of a child in order to make the diagnosis.
